CASE STUDYSYNTHETIC CASE STUDY / 02

The Liquidity Illusion

A fictional shareholder scenario that separates a portfolio valuation from the ability to transfer an unlisted holding.

Fictional educational case study. This scenario does not represent a real issuer, shareholder or historical transaction.

A closer look at the evidence, the assumptions and the questions that matter beyond a headline number.
SECTION 01

The hypothetical holding

Consider a shareholder who enters an estimated value into a personal portfolio and sees that value rise after applying an optimistic scenario. The dashboard is mathematically consistent, but the shareholder has not established a counterparty, reviewed transfer restrictions or verified a transaction price.

This example is fictional and does not describe any issuer, investor or executable securities transaction.

SECTION 02

Three distinct questions

First, what does the ownership documentation confirm? Second, which company and shareholder provisions govern a transfer? Third, is there evidence of demand on terms relevant to the specific security class?

A valuation model answers none of these questions on its own. A proposed listing or a market rumour does not establish timing, transfer permissions or an assured exit.

SECTION 03

Make the dashboard honest

A trustworthy portfolio view should label acquisition figures as user-reported, value ranges as estimates and liquidity observations as separately sourced. It should preserve the dates and assumptions behind each modelled value.

The objective is not to make a holding look more marketable. It is to make exposure, uncertainty and missing documentation visible before the information is used for a decision.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS TO TAKE AWAY

Questions worth asking.

  1. What security is actually owned?
  2. What transfer rights apply?
  3. Is there a genuine exit path?
